Murder Set Pieces (Fright Flix productions DVD)

Tagline: “The most visceral horror film ever made”.

If and when you come across this crusty critter on Lions Gate DVD let it be known that they CUT out a big chunk---around 8 minutes---of violence, gore and sickness for an R-rating; giving that what’s the point look. But fear not fellow gorehound sickies, all the rancid goodies are intact here in this Director’s Cut. A German neo-Nazi psycho photographer with pent up childhood anxieties and strong disregard for women picks up siliconized sluts in Las Vegas’ seedy district to photograph, rape, generally violate, and brutally murder with a straight razor and even some chain saw misconduct with extremely gory f/x by folks over at Toe-Tag. [Check out their “August Underground” trilogy for more disturbing sickness.]

Writer, Producer, Director Nick Palumbo first created a buzz with his first snuff style serial killer flick “The Nutbag”. [Note: I watched the trailer in the Xtras that told me I wouldn’t be able to get through the ultra cheap shot on video crap.] Where films like “Hostel & Hostel 2” and “Saw” series have been ludicrously labeled as ‘Torture Porn’, the term is much more applicable to this blood-soaked atrocity. I can’t say it is a great film by any measure, but this goes for sucker punch to the gut, as it is sick, misogynistic, perverse, disgusting, unsettling and over all fun to watch if you like things on the truly disturbing side. Which I certainly do. The biggest hurdle is the dull story, amateurish acting, and the fact that at times it just comes across as unintentionally funny. Like the muscle bound killer Sven Garrett that spouts lines of [un-subtitled] German while feverishly brutalizing his victims. The whole video store scene is a hoot and so unnecessary and when he chews on the Halloween prop torso, oohhh, should have snipped that very fake looking bit out Nick.

The real star of the show is the outstanding nauseating---aptly titled---Murder Set Pieces and perverse sexual violence that will defiantly violate the senses of O-ffendies. The rape scenes are sadistic and vicious and the crying toddler hanging on to his beaten and dead mother will have some crying foul, while I welcome the boldness. Palumbo does manage to push the limit and defiantly shows plenty of promise for extreme cinema fans. Look for odd cameos by Gunnar Hansen, Edwin Neil, Tony Todd, and Cerina Vincent.

Fright Flix Productions DVD offers the UNCUT Director’s Cut re-mastered from the 35 mm negative with a clean transfer presented at 1.85:1 in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
